Cheadle keep on rolling at Stone

6 Jun 2021

It was another win on the road for Cheadle 1st XI on Saturday as they beat Stone by 3 wickets in a top of the table clash. The home side won the toss and batted first but they were soon in some serious trouble as Matt Goodwin and James Sellers reduced them to 28 for 4 in the early exchanges. Ben Mottley and Daniel Lunn then added 83 for the fifth wicket and though Cheadle kept things relatively tight, this allowed them to post a competitive total in their 45 overs of 179 for 8. Goodwin finished with 3 for 45.

After a couple of early wickets it was Andy Coxon (37) and Ali Khan who provided the key partnership of the afternoon adding 99 for the third wicket In good time and this got Cheadle well ahead of the required scoring rate. However, when Khan was dismissed for a run a ball 62 it led to a small flurry of wickets and gave the home side some hope.  In the end it was left to the Sellers brothers to finish the job which they did with over 2 overs to spare. The win means that the Bassets lead at the top of the table is now extended to 16 .

The 2nd team fell to back-to-back defeats as Moddershall-Oulton won by 24 runs at Tean Road. Modd made 196 for 5 in their 40 overs, Josh Renshaw’s 85 not out being the main contribution. Charlie Goldstraw provided the outstanding bowling performance for Cheadle with 4 for 20 from his 8 overs. Cheadle were always a little off the pace in the reply and despite a fifty from Adam Alcock and 42 from Sam Rushton they weren’t able to overhaul the oppositions total and were bowled out in the final over for 172.

The 3rd teams great run continues as they beat Stafford in the division 8 clash. Cheadle’s 185 was based on the top 3 of Scott Harvey (46), Matt (40) and Joe Degg (50) all scoring heavily. Stafford only managed 85 in reply after another clinical bowling performance, Matt Degg completing a fine all-round performance with 3 for 11.
