Cheadle suffered a first league defeat since the opening weekend of the season as they went down at J&G Meakins last Saturday. Winning the toss and choosing to bat first the visitors' innings never really ignited, and had it not been for Andy Coxon, who was the last man out for 43 the 107 total could have been even less. Of the remaining batsmen only Ozzy Crump made double figures with Paul Byrne’s 4 for 17 being the pick of the Meakins bowlers.
Cheadle battled away with the ball and Matt Goodwin took early wickets to reduce the home side to 19 for 2, but Sam Moores with 37 and Michael Hill with 27 made sure that they got home by 6 wickets with time to spare.
Things had gone much better on Friday evening when the 1st Team won their first group game in this year’s Cricket Cave 20/20 knockout against Ashcombe Park. Ashcombe posted 119 but it took only 11.5 overs for Cheadle to knock the runs off, Ali Khan’s 33 ball fifty doing most of the damage.
The 2nd team also suffered a defeat to Meakins on Saturday. Cheadle’s 125 all out was short of the total they were looking for batting first at Tean Road though Sam Rushton continued his good form, top-scoring with 36. Cheadle bowled well and took the game to penultimate over, but Tom Fox’s 50 proved to be the pivotal innings as they won by 4 wickets. Will Riley and Ryan Harvey took 2 wickets each.
There were no such problems for the 3rd team though, as they stay unbeaten at the top of Division 8. Stafford were restricted to only 104 for 9 from their 40 overs (Jamie Bratt 3 for 10) and it then took only 16 overs to knock off the runs. It was 2 juniors, Alfie Bonehill (39 not out) and Archie Pyatt (23 not out) who did the damage helped by Ryan Day with a rapid 32 off only 18 balls.
